How a senior move works with Trunk
From the moment you call us to the moment your loved one is settled in their new home, the same named person is with you every step of the way.
Free home visit
We come to you – no call centres, no pressure. We assess the property, understand the move, and talk you through our approach at whatever pace suits you.
Sort & declutter
We work through belongings together, at your pace. What goes to the new home, what goes to family, what goes to storage, and what can be donated or cleared.
Pack & move
Our in-house team handles everything with care. We use specialist packing for fragile and sentimental items, and our own vehicles – never subcontracted.
Settle in
We don’t leave until everything is in place. Furniture positioned, beds made, pictures hung. You or your loved one goes to sleep in their new home that first night, not surrounded by boxes.
Storage & Downsizing
Most people don't decide everything on moving day
A retirement apartment is a different space from a four-bedroom family home. There will be furniture and belongings that don’t fit – but that doesn’t mean they need to be dealt with immediately.
Our own storage facility in Grays, Essex means you have secure, accessible space for as long as you need it. Items can come out gradually as decisions are made or stay stored safely until the right moment.
Storage is included within our Managed Move and Complete Transition packages, not as a separate cost to arrange elsewhere.
What can go into storage
- Furniture that won't fit in the new home
- Items being passed on to children or grandchildren
- Seasonal belongings - garden furniture, holiday items
- Sentimental items needing more time to decide about
- Belongings awaiting a property sale
- Antiques or artwork being assessed or gifted

We understand what this move means
This isn't just a house move. And we don't treat it like one.
A family home of 30 or 40 years holds more than furniture. It holds the children’s heights marked on a doorframe, the garden that took decades to grow, a lifetime of ordinary mornings. Leaving that behind, even for a beautiful retirement apartment, is emotionally enormous.
If you’re an adult child managing this for your mum or dad, we know you’re carrying it too. The guilt of not being closer. The worry that you’ll get it wrong. The quiet hope that someone experienced will take the weight off your shoulders.
That’s exactly what we’re here for. Not just to move boxes, but to make this the beginning of something good, and ensure you are settled, safe, and genuinely comfortable in your new home.

What makes us different from any other removal company
In-house team – no subcontractors
Every person who enters your loved one’s home is a Trunk employee. We don’t hire in crews for busy periods or subcontract any part of the move. The same faces, the same standards, every time.
One named move manager
You’ll have one named person – not a call centre. They handle everything, know your situation, and are contactable throughout. For family managing from a distance, this matters enormously.
Own secure storage facility
Most people downsizing don’t move everything on day one. Our storage is part of the service and not a third-party arrangement. You keep access, and items can be retrieved whenever you’re ready.
7+ years of experience
Our accreditations such as Move Assured, Self Storage Association and International Association Of Movers reflect the standards we’ve maintained throughout.
Local and genuinely regional
We’re based in Essex and cover the surrounding regions personally – not via a national franchise. You’re not dealing with a call centre. You’re dealing with us, directly.
Fixed price with no surprises
After your home visit, you’ll receive a fixed, written quote that won’t change after booking. No hidden charges, no variable rates based on the day or distance. One price, agreed upfront.
Essex
Our home county - senior moves across the full breadth of Essex.
From Chelmsford and Colchester to Southend-on-Sea, Basildon, Brentwood and Harlow. We're based in Grays which means Essex clients benefit from our shortest travel times and most competitive pricing. Major retirement developments from Churchill, Anchor and Audley are all well within our regular operation.
London
Senior moves from any London borough - parking permits, access and ULEZ managed.
Particularly active in East and South East London - Havering, Barking & Dagenham, Newham, Bromley, Lewisham and Greenwich. Many of our London clients are adult children managing remotely. Our named move manager keeps families updated throughout the day, wherever they are.
Kent
Senior removals across Kent - from North Kent to Sevenoaks, Maidstone and the coast.
We cross the Dartford Crossing regularly and cover the full county. Experienced with rural Weald properties and town centre retirement developments in Sevenoaks, Maidstone, Tonbridge and Whitstable. McCarthy Stone, Churchill and Retirement Villages Group are all active in our regular Kent areas.
Hertfordshire
Senior moves across Hertfordshire - including from large family homes in the affluent commuter belt.
Covering St Albans, Hertford, Watford, Harpenden, Bishop's Stortford and beyond. Many Hertfordshire senior moves originate from substantial family properties requiring multi-session declutters. McCarthy Stone and Inspired Villages both have significant Hertfordshire presence in our regular areas.
Surrey
Senior removals across Surrey - Guildford, Woking, Reigate, Epsom and the stockbroker belt.
Surrey generates some of our most complex senior moves - large detached homes in Cobham, Oxshott and East Horsley downsizing to retirement apartments. Audley's Fairmile development, McCarthy Stone across Guildford and Woking, and Churchill in Farnham and Godalming are all areas we serve regularly.
Cambridge
Senior moves in Cambridge city and across Cambridgeshire - including Ely, Huntingdon and Saffron Walden.
Cambridge moves often require particular care - academic households, Victorian terrace access challenges, and collections that need handling thoughtfully. We also serve the Saffron Walden area on the Essex-Cambridgeshire border as a core part of our regular operation.
Senior Living Moving Service - Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a senior move cost?
We don’t publish prices online because no two moves are the same as two-bedroom house in Southend is a very different job to a five-bedroom family home in Saffron Walden. What we do is offer a free home visit, during which we assess the property and your requirements, then give you a fixed written quote. That price won’t change after booking.
We offer three package tiers: The Essential Move, The Managed Move and The Complete Transition, and we’ll always recommend what genuinely suits your situation, not what’s most expensive.
How long does the whole process take?
It varies depending on the package and the size of the property. The declutter sessions in our Managed Move and Complete Transition packages can span several visits over a few weeks as some families prefer to take their time with this. The move day itself is typically one day. Settle-in is completed the same day you move in.
We’ll give you a clear timeline when we visit and are flexible around retirement village availability dates and your family’s schedule.
What happens to belongings that won't fit in the new home?
This is one of the most important parts of the process. During the declutter stage, we help sort belongings into categories: going to the new home, going to family members, going into storage, going to charity, or being cleared. Nothing is rushed. Our move manager works through this with you at whatever pace suits your loved one.
Donated items are taken to local charities. Items for storage go into our own facility. A full house clearance for remaining contents is included in The Complete Transition package.
Can family members be kept informed throughout?
Yes and for many of our clients this is the most reassuring part of the service. Your named move manager will provide updates to nominated family members throughout the process. If you’re managing this from a distance, you’ll know exactly what’s happening and when.
Do you offer storage as part of the service?
Yes. We have our own secure storage facility in Grays, Essex, with additional sites across the county. Storage access is included in The Managed Move and The Complete Transition so you don’t need to organise it separately or pay a third party. Items can be accessed by you or your family at any time.
What happens if my parent has dementie or mobility issues?
We work with many older people who have varying levels of mobility, memory, and health. Our team is trained to be patient, calm and adaptable. We work at the pace that’s right for your loved one and not a logistics schedule. If there are specific considerations we should know about before the visit, please tell us when you call or in the form above and we’ll plan accordingly.
What areas does your senior living moving service cover?
We cover Essex, London, Kent, Hertfordshire, Surrey and Cambridge with our senior living moving service, roughly 90 minutes from our base in Grays, Essex. If you’re unsure whether we cover your area, call us on 0330 998 8282 and we’ll let you know straight away.
