How Your UK to Australia Move Works

Survey, Plan, and Fix Your Price

A member of our own team carries out your survey in person or by video. We confirm your shipment volume in cubic metres, determine whether FCL or LCL is right for your move, identify any items requiring specialist crating, and prepare your DAFF biosecurity and B534 customs documentation in advance. Your fixed all-inclusive price is confirmed at this stage.

Export Packing And Biosecurity Preparation

Our own export-trained crews pack your belongings using materials rated for long-haul sea freight. Outdoor equipment, wooden furniture, and any items carrying biosecurity risk are cleaned and prepared to DAFF standards at this stage. This is also when your Detailed Packing List (DPL) is produced — the document Australian authorities require on arrival.

Container Shipping and UK Collection

Your shipment is loaded by our own container loading team and dispatched via scheduled sea freight from UK port to your Australian destination port – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Perth. FCL gives you a dedicated 20ft or 40ft container with faster transit and fewer handling stages. LCL shares container space and is the cost-proportionate option for smaller moves, with pricing based on the cubic meterage your consignment occupies.

Customs Clearance and Delivery

Once cleared through B534 customs and DAFF biosecurity inspection at the arrival port, your shipment is delivered to your property through our IAM-certified Australian partner network. Port handling, inland transport, and final delivery are coordinated by your single Trunk Logistics contact throughout.

Storage Before and After Your Australia Move

If your UK move-out date does not align with your shipping schedule, we provide secure storage at our own four Essex facilities before your consignment departs. DAFF biosecurity preparation can be completed in storage before loading where items require additional cleaning or treatment. At the Australian end, destination storage in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Perth is available through our IAM-certified Australian partners where your property is not ready on arrival. Duration and cost at both ends are confirmed at survey stage.

How Long Does a UK to Australia Removal Take?

Most UK to Australia moves take 10 to 14 weeks door-to-door by sea freight, depending on your destination city and shipping method. Timelines follow fixed vessel schedules.

Routing and Container Selection

Your relocation is primarily shaped by your total shipment volume and your specific destination in Australia. These factors determine whether you utilize a Full Container Load (FCL) for a dedicated household move or a Shared Container (LCL/Groupage) for a smaller shipment. Most relocations are routed via major Australian entry ports such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Perth, with the final delivery route planned around your proximity to these hubs or regional inland areas.  Learn more about container shipping options.

Managing Import Controls and Biosecurity

Australia maintains some of the strictest biosecurity regulations globally, meaning your move must be planned around compliance before the packing stage begins. We structure your relocation to account for Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) inspections and B534 Customs requirements from the outset. By confirming these logistical details during your initial survey, we ensure your move is based on accurate routing, realistic transit windows, and verified clearance requirements rather than assumptions.  Learn more about Moving to Australia and their customs regulations.

How Distance and Inspection Processes Drive Australia Moving Timelines

Relocating from the UK to Australia involves one of the longest international transit routes, meaning timelines are significantly more extended than European or North American moves. Your schedule is governed by three primary factors: fixed vessel sailing frequencies, long-distance ocean transit, and Australia’s intensive arrival procedures. Rather than a single fixed date, your timeline is managed as a series of phases including export packing, sea or air freight transport, mandatory customs clearance, and Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) biosecurity inspections.

Sea Freight vs. Air Freight Transit Times

Sea freight is the most common method for Australian relocations, typically taking several weeks from UK collection to port arrival. This duration accounts for packing, container loading at our UK hubs, and the long-distance ocean transit to major hubs like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Perth. Departures are dictated by international vessel schedules, meaning early booking is essential to secure space on the most direct routes. For those requiring essential belongings immediately, air freight offers a significantly faster alternative, usually arriving and clearing within one to two weeks, though it remains subject to the same strict biosecurity and customs protocols as sea shipments.

What Your UK to Australia Removal Costs

Two moves to Australia can vary significantly in cost depending on volume, destination city, and biosecurity requirements. Trunk Logistics prices every move on confirmed shipment volume, container type, and delivery destination.

What Your UK to Australia Removal Quote Covers

Your move cost covers everything: UK collection by our own crew, export packing using our own materials, container loading by our own team, international sea freight, DAFF biosecurity coordination, B534 customs clearance through our IAM partners, and final delivery to your address. Marine insurance is arranged directly by Trunk Logistics – cover options are confirmed during your survey. There are no hidden costs. What you are quoted after your survey is what you pay.

How Volume, Destination City, and DAFF Biosecurity Requirements Drive the Cost

Volume is the primary cost driver as it determines container size, packing requirements, and handling at both ends. Biosecurity adds cost where items require DAFF inspection, cleaning, or treatment on arrival; correct preparation at the packing stage significantly reduces this risk. Delivery destination affects inland transport cost, with Perth and remote or regional addresses carrying higher delivery costs than Sydney or Melbourne metro.

How Volume, Destination City, and DAFF Biosecurity Requirements Drive the Cost

Frequently Asked Questions - UK to Australia Removals

Yes. We coordinate deliveries to all regional and remote areas beyond major metropolitan hubs like Sydney or Perth. However, because inland transport distances in Australia can be vast, these moves require additional logistical planning. We factor in these extended haulage requirements and any specific local access conditions during the initial survey stage to ensure that the final leg of your journey is as structured and predictable as the ocean transit itself.

Marine insurance is not included as standard but is arranged directly by Trunk Logistics and cover options are confirmed during your survey. Given the distance and number of handling stages involved, taking out cover is strongly recommended.

All shipments require a B534 Customs and Quarantine Entry declaration, submitted through an ABF-registered customs broker at the Australian port. A Detailed Packing List (DPL) produced at the UK packing stage is required to support the declaration. Items arriving from the UK are subject to DAFF biosecurity inspection therefore any goods carrying organic material, soil, or biosecurity risk may be held for treatment. Trunk Logistics prepares all documentation before your shipment departs and coordinates with IAM-certified Australian partners for customs and biosecurity processing on arrival.

In the vast majority of cases, you must have arrived in Australia or be available to complete the mandatory customs and quarantine clearance processes. This involves being physically present in the country to provide the necessary travel documentation and authorizing an accredited customs broker to act on your behalf. If you have not arrived or arranged these details in advance, your shipment cannot be cleared and may be held in bonded storage at the port, leading to high daily accumulation charges.

This is not recommended. If your shipment arrives at an Australian port before your visa or residency status is active, authorities may refuse to clear the goods. Furthermore, shipments held while waiting for visa confirmation often accrue substantial storage and demurrage charges at the port. We strongly advise that your shipping schedule is strictly aligned with your visa approval and intended arrival date to ensure a smooth transition through customs.
